This small yet distinctive garden was designed to capture the quaint charm of a New Orleans courtyard while celebrating the client’s passion for koi fish. We were commissioned to create a space that merges formality with personal expression. At its heart lies a graceful pond, centered around an antique wrought iron fountain, home to mature koi fish. From this central feature, a series of interconnected garden rooms unfold, each aligned with the axial orientation of the home. Passing through a wooden arbor and a vibrant butterfly garden, the eye is drawn to a shell wall fountain and a secondary pond—this one designed for the “youngling” koi—framed by lush, bi-symmetrical border gardens. To the north of the main fountain, an outdoor dining garden offers a space for entertaining, seamlessly leading to a formal lawn. This area is accessed through a pair of sculpted topiary lilacs that frame an iris garden layered with seasonal understory plantings, creating a dynamic yet cohesive experience throughout the garden.
